The Great Commission is the name Christians give to Jesus Christ’s final marching orders to His disciples after His resurrection. It is not a suggestion, and it is not only for pastors and missionaries. It is the mission Jesus Christ gives to everyone who follows Him.
If you have ever wondered what your purpose is as a believer, the Great Commission gives you a clear answer. It also gives you a deep comfort: Jesus Christ does not send you out alone.
Where the Great Commission Is Found
The most direct statement is in Matthew 28:18-20. After rising from the dead, Jesus Christ meets His disciples and says:
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

– Mark 16:15 speaks of preaching the Gospel to all creation.
– Luke 24:46-49 connects the message to repentance and forgiveness of sins.
– John 20:21 records Jesus saying, As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.

Together, these passages show the Great Commission is a core part of Jesus Christ’s plan for the church.
The Foundation: Jesus Christ’s Authority
Jesus Christ begins with, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me (Matthew 28:18). That is not only comforting. It is cosmic.
Jesus Christ is not asking you to represent Him as a hopeful spiritual teacher. He is the risen King. His authority covers every culture, every city, every government, every era. That means the mission is not built on our charisma. It is built on His kingship.
When you share Christ with someone, you are not pushing an opinion. You are bearing witness to the reality of the risen Lord (Acts 2:32-36).
The Command: Make Disciples
The key command is make disciples. Notice Jesus Christ does not say, Go speak. He says make disciples. A disciple is a learner who follows. That includes belief, but it continues into obedience and transformation.
Jesus Christ gives three practical pieces to disciple-making:
– Go
– Baptize
– Teach
Go means the mission is outward. It does not always mean moving overseas. It can mean crossing the street, opening your home, being intentional in your workplace, and letting your everyday life become a platform for love and truth.
Baptize means bring people into the visible community of faith. Baptism is not only a private spiritual moment. It is a public identification with Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4).
Teach them to obey means discipleship is more than information. Jesus Christ wants people to live what He taught. This includes forgiveness, purity of heart, mercy, prayer, generosity, and love for enemies (Matthew 5 to 7 is full of examples).
All Nations: The Gospel Is Global
Jesus says all nations, meaning the mission includes every people group. God’s heart has always been global. In Genesis 12:3, God promises Abraham that all peoples on earth will be blessed through him. The Great Commission is the fulfillment of that promise.
This matters for how we think about church and community. The church is meant to reflect the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural beauty of God’s kingdom (Revelation 7:9). Racism, tribalism, and superiority have no place in the people of Jesus.
The Power: The Holy Spirit
Sometimes people hear the Great Commission and feel intimidated. That is understandable. But Jesus connects the mission to power.
Acts 1:8 says, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses¦ The mission is not fueled by guilt. It is fueled by the Spirit. The Spirit gives courage, words, wisdom, love, and endurance.
When I pray before a conversation about Jesus, I often ask for two simple things: boldness and tenderness. Boldness to speak truth clearly. Tenderness to love the person in front of me. That kind of balance is the Spirit’s work.
The Promise: Jesus Is With You
The Great Commission ends with one of the most comforting promises in the Bible: I am with you always (Matthew 28:20).
Jesus does not promise you will never feel awkward. He does not promise every conversation will go smoothly. He does promise His presence. That is everything.
If you ever feel unqualified, remember who the original disciples were. They were ordinary men who had recently failed, doubted, and scattered. Yet Jesus Christ restored them and sent them. That tells you the mission is carried by grace.
What the Great Commission Looks Like in Daily Life
Here are a few ways to live it without turning into someone you are not:
– Pray for people by name (1 Timothy 2:1 encourages prayers for all).
– Build genuine friendships and listen well.
– Share your story of what Jesus Christ has done in you (Mark 5:19 shows this pattern).
– Invite people into Scripture and community.
– Serve your city with love so the Gospel is seen, not only heard.
The Great Commission is Jesus Christ telling you, My kingdom is expanding and I want you to be part of it. It is bigger than programs. It is the steady work of love, truth, and witness, empowered by the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ, under the authority of the risen King.
If you keep your heart close to Jesus Christ, you will find that making disciples is not a heavy burden. It becomes a joyful overflow of knowing Him.
